Municipality of Meaford, nestled along the southern shore of Georgian Bay, stretches from sandy Christie Beach to the picturesque village of Leith. It incorporates the environmentally protected Niagara Escarpment, including a scenic section of the Bruce Trail. The popular Georgian Trail follows the old railway line from Meaford to Collingwood, and is a frequent path for bicyclists, walkers, and in the winter months, cross-country skiers. Recreational fishing, boating and camping facilities make visiting the Municipality of Meaford a pleasurable experience. For those who prefer backroad exploring, antique shops & artisan studios provide welcome stopping points along the way, whether traveling by bike or car. There are numerous parks and public beaches located throughout the municipality, including Beautiful Joe Park, which is dedicated to the inspiration for Margaret Marshall Saunder's book "Beautiful Joe". The Beautiful Joe Heritage Society was formed in 1994 to honour the life and story of Beautiful Joe and to raise awareness of animal rights. There are many quaint villages incorporated within the Municipality of Meaford, which includes the former St. Vincent Township, Sydenham Township and Town of Meaford. Each village holds its own special charm & features, such as accommodation, antique shops and local markets. The National Communities in Bloom competition voted the Municipality of Meaford Provincial Winner in 1999, National Winner in 2000 and Canadian Classic Winner in 2002. During the summer months, the critically acclaimed The Georgian Theatre Festival presents the only professional theatre productions in this part of the province. The historic venue, Meaford Hall, was built more than a century ago and has recently undergone a major restoration and renovation making it a premier arts and culture centre.. The major U.S. border points are approximately a 5½ hr. drive from the Municipality, with easy access via the 400 series highways. The retail shopping district is primarily located in downtown Meaford. There are more than 55 unique shops and 28 restaurants located nearby. The total Trade Area population is 10,400. Schools, churches, libraries, recreation, service clubs and other community facilities are conveniently located, contributing to the full and rich four-season lifestyle enjoyed by the local residents and visitors alike.
